The best dog trainers in Leeds will transform your dog!

Training and Experience. We checked that the dog trainers we recommend took up some form of dog training from a renowned institution like the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT). Then, they should be a member of IMDT.

Additionally, we’d like it if the trainers had at least a year of experience training dogs for a living. This way, they have encountered a good number of dogs, all varying in personality, so their skills get better each time.

Convenience. Dog training has to be done for a few days (up to a week or more) for it to be effective, so we checked how convenient the trainers are.

Maybe their on-site training ground is conveniently located, or they have multiple training locations that the clients can choose from. It would even be nice if the trainers offered training sessions at the client’s house for the utmost convenience.

Training Style. We judged how the trainers work with the dogs. Ideally, they should be patient and friendly, and they should use the rewards-based system to incentivise the dogs into good behaviour.

In addition to our own observations, we also interviewed other customers about their experiences for more insight.

Pricing. As much as possible, we don’t want the rate to exceed £100 per session. The trainers get bonus points if they have multi-session packages because these let clients save money in a way.

As someone who has multiple pet dogs, I understand the pain of getting a new pet and they’re untrained. Don’t ask me how many household items I’ve lost because of a wild new pet dog (the answer is too many).

Thankfully, there are many dog trainers in Leeds who are more than happy to train my dogs for a few days. I’ve watched some of these training sessions myself, and I’m impressed with how they made my dogs obedient in no time!

If your pet is stressing you out, here are some of the best dog trainers in Leeds you can trust to effectively but gently teach them.

How much does a dog trainer cost in Leeds?

Hiring a dog trainer in Leeds usually falls between £30 and £100 per one-hour session. Some trainers allow multi-session booking, and the cost for this package is in the £300 and £500 ballpark.

I brought all my dogs to Yorkshire Canine Academy, and I’m glad I did. In just under five days, they went from reactive to behaved, and now I can actually bring them to public spaces like parks and even dog grooming salons without worry.

I like that this school offers different class types. The usual setup is a 1-to-1 training session, but once your dog “graduates” from it, they can move on to a group class so that they can socialise with other dogs. (I highly recommend you do this.)

Virtual training is also available here, which is a convenient option for people who are too busy to go to the on-site training location.

Another thing I like about this school is their 100% money-back guarantee. This warranty is available for 60 days after your dog finishes training and applies if they’re still not showing any signs of progress.

The facilities are amazing as well. In addition to their own enclosed training field, this school also has an air-conditioned/heated dog room where the dogs can rest in between training sessions and a coffee shop for your snacking needs.

The one downside here is the expensive pricing. The initial behaviour assessment alone costs £100 a pop!

Pros

  • Quick and effective training
  • Different class types available (1-to-1, group, and virtual)
  • 100% money-back guarantee available
  • Amazing on-site facilities

Cons

  • Expensive, especially the initial behaviour assessment

Kind, patient, and supportive trainers

Had a wonderful 5-day development training week at YCA. I brought my 13-month-old Belgian Malinois, who was very much dog reactive and I used to feel limited about where we go. After 5-day course his reactivity was gone and I have so much more confidence to take him to parks and even restaurants/pubs. The change after training was amazing, 20% of training gave 80% results. I’m so thankful to Jacob and the whole YCA team for their kindness, patience and support. It truly opened a new chapter for me and my dog Odin. Highly recommend!

Effective lessons

My dog was a complete nightmare, very reactive, making walks a complete headache as having to avoid other dogs all the time. I took the 5-day course, and by day 3, he’s able to be around loads of dogs without any reactivity. So impressed, can’t wait to see what the next 2 days bring. You guys are the best, thank you so much.

Bankhouse Barkers Dog Training Club has the usual training workshops that instil confidence and obedience into your furry baby, but they also have training classes for dog “sports.” These classes are perfect if you want to improve your dog’s agility skills.

One thing that clients love about this school is the level of support they get from the trainers. Support doesn’t just stop at the training sessions; there’s literally a Facebook group where you can rehash all that you’ve learned or ask any questions you have.

The main trainer, Sam, gets a lot of praise as well for her wealth of knowledge and adaptability. One client said her dog wasn’t receptive to some of the techniques, and Sam went on to modify the curriculum with no problem.

The prices here are great as well. Classes are mostly around £20 or £30 per session, which is such an affordable rate. It’s no wonder there are many repeat customers here!

However, one disadvantage of this school is the location. It’s right at the tail end of a small and narrow street, so you might struggle finding it, even with the help of Google Maps.

Pros

  • Good variety of classes
  • Amazing level of support (there’s a Facebook group)
  • Knowledgeable and adaptable trainer
  • Affordable pricing

Cons

  • Hard-to-find location

Patient and effective dog training

I would totally recommend Bankhouse Barkers for dog training. My first dog I took was totally transformed from being very nervous and no one could even look at her, to a dog that loved doing tricks, loose-lead walking and agility. My second dog a Sharpei, who are very laid back dogs and would rather go to sleep has been changed into a dog who enjoys doing different things, from discipline to agility. With a few treats and patience, you can teach your dog anything.”

Safe and enjoyable training

Cannot recommend Bankhouse Barkers enough. We got our rescue Border Collie (with a lot of issues) in November 2020 and started taking him to Sam, and have been going ever since. As a result of working through his issues and obedience, through reward-based training, he soon became a different dog. He loves his agility and learning new tricks. It’s surprising how quickly he learns by using such as a treat or a toy as a reward. This way of training is much safer and more enjoyable for your dog than other unconventional methods.”

Unlike the other dog training schools on this list, Leeds Dog School doesn’t have a main on-site location. Instead, they have different training areas in Leeds and surrounding towns like Wetherby, Morley, and Otley, so you can just choose one that’s close to you.

They even have a residential bootcamp, which comprises several intensive training sessions that focus on obedience and behaviour training. You’re also part of the training, so that you’ll know the basic commands and how to control your dog.

Customers love how easy it is to talk to the dog trainers, Rob Dye and Kyle Jordan. They always try to create a fun environment for training, and when they struggle with the dog, they’re quick to adapt and attempt new techniques.

The trainers are also experienced in working with a wide variety of dog breeds. From small dogs like shih tzus and pomeranians to large dogs like German Shepherds and rottweilers, Rob and Kyle can take them on.

The classes here are very expensive, though. Two 1-to-1 sessions already cost around £320, while puppy classes are around £200.

Pros

  • Has several training locations
  • Intensive residential training bootcamp available
  • Easy to talk to and flexible trainers
  • Experienced in working with a wide variety of dog breeds

Cons

  • Expensive

Amazing training lessons

Rob had George for 2 weeks, and the difference he’s made in those two weeks is simply amazing. George now walks to heel, stops and sits when I stop, to mention a few. A very useful handover lesson when collecting George will allow us to keep George up to scratch. We’re looking forward to the follow-up lessons in the near future.

Lovely and supportive trainers

After months of trying all sorts of getting my 14-month Patterdale cross Lakeland Terrier to walk with me on lead and not go for other dogs on site was proving difficult. At home, he is the most lovable dog, he plays all day and gets on with my other dog and family’s dogs. I had heard about boot camps for dogs and came across Leeds Dog School. I made up my mind to call them. They were lovely people, I now don’t feel alone and have their full support whom I can call on anytime, free of charge.”

Technically, The Dog Training Company HQ isn’t within Leeds, but it’s only around 20 minutes from the city, so it isn’t too far. Still, this dog training school is located along a narrow street, far from the main roads, so finding it might be a bit of a struggle.

All the same, pet owners in Leeds don’t mind taking the trip to this school because this training school offers a good array of services.

Behavioural training and puppy training are their most sought-after classes, and they also offer residential training if you want more intensive lessons. They even have home visit training as well, which trains your dog at your house or other setting of your choice!

The trainers follow a holistic approach and a structured training system, so it’s easy to see every sign of progress. Pet owners also like that they’re included in the sessions. They learn some practical skills with their dogs, which helps them gain confidence.

Pricing here is pretty affordable, too, with the initial consultation starting at £50. As for the classes, they’re usually sold in packaged bundles depending on your dog’s needs, so you can try to negotiate the final rates.

Pros

  • Good array of services
  • Home visit training available
  • Holistic approach and structured training system
  • Pet owners included in the training sessions
  • Affordable pricing

Holistic approach, structured system

We adopted a two-year-old Doberman six months ago, which as you can imagine came with its fair share of teething problems. We opted for the Silver Package with Adam, who has been absolutely brilliant. Coming from a coaching background myself, I really appreciate his holistic approach and the structured system the company uses, it has been an excellent framework to follow. As new dog owners, we faced some challenges along the way, but the clear communication and online platform helped us stay on track and the customer service has been top quality throughout. The difference in our dog over the past five months has been incredible. Highly recommend.

Great facility, friendly staff

Tommy is a legend! He has transformed by 4 year old German shepherd! I initially booked an assessment where trainer Shannon made us do exercises to put him under pressure to assess what my dog needed. He had severe dog aggression where walking him was a nightmare and so I opted for the gold package. After completing this package with Tommy, my dogs engagement and lead pulling had massively improved. I recently booked onto a boost day with Tommy as my dog had started to react to dogs again (a year later). This day was the best day as we were put to work and went to the park where both me and my dog were really tested. The feedback and advice was great and I feel more confident with my dog. I would definitely recommend this company to anyone who is struggling with their dog. Their new facility is great and the staff there are very friendly. My dog was very relaxed around Tommy. His patience and knowledge was brilliant! Thanks!

If you’re looking for an affordable dog trainer, Walkabout Hounds Dog Training Centre is the place to go. Their standard weekly sessions cost between £15 and £20 each, while the 1-to-1 classes range between £42 and £60. Not too bad, if you ask me!

They also offer training at home, which is good news for people with busy schedules. This one is the most expensive option (between £72 and £90), but at least it makes things convenient for you and your pup.

Clients commend the dog trainers, saying that James and Davina Wiles are experienced, knowledgeable, and patient. I’ve heard stories of anxious and disruptive dogs here, but James and Davina managed to improve their behaviours in a few days!

However, the one downside to this training centre is that they specialise in gundog training (gundogs assist hunters in finding and retrieving game), so their main clientele is made up of country sports enthusiasts who want to train their dogs.

They do offer basic obedience courses here, but their availability isn’t as often as the gundog training ones. If you just want a simple obedience training class, I recommend checking a different training centre.

Pros

  • Affordable rates
  • Training at home available
  • Experienced, knowledgeable, and patient dog trainers

Cons

  • Specialises in gundog training (there are basic obedience courses, but they’re not available often)

Knowledgeable and responsive trainers

My Welsh Springer Spaniel and I have been training with James and Davina for nearly 3 years. In that time, we’ve enjoyed many 1-1 and group gundog training sessions. We are now beating and competing in non-KC working assessments and see progress in every training session. James and Davina are really knowledgeable, with a genuine love for dogs. They take time to answer questions and the learning style really suits us. We never feel anything but empowered and encouraged from our sessions. I look forward to seeing what we can achieve this year. 11/10 would recommend.

Highly professional trainers

All of my dogs have been to Davina and James from puppy class to gun dog to 1-1s they are highly professional, knowledgable and really know there stuff about training. There classes made me feel welcome and no question is ever silly and most importantly my dogs love going they even know both their names and wait at the car to go! Would recommend them to anyone, thank you for all your help James and Davina.”
