The other week, I took a bad fall playing football with pals in the neighbourhood and ended up with a painful knee injury. It hurt enough that my GP suggested I see an orthopaedic specialist to make sure nothing serious was going on.
After a proper check, it turned out to be a muscle sprain, and a few sessions of physio sorted me out. The whole thing made me realise how common musculoskeletal problems are, whether it’s a sprain or something more serious.
Since most of us will face issues like this at some point, I decided to put together a list of the best orthopaedic specialists in Leeds so you know where to go when you need help.

After my doctor suggested I see an orthopaedic specialist, I decided to visit Leeds Knee Clinic. They can bill most insurance companies directly, including mine, which saved me some hassle.
The specialist I met was Owen Wall, a member of the British Orthopaedic Association with strong experience in stem cell treatments. I was fortunate that my issue was only a muscle sprain, so I didn’t need the more advanced procedures he offers.
After completing the physio sessions, I was back to moving comfortably again.
During my consultation, I asked about other treatments and was surprised to learn they handle ACL injury surgeries and also provide Arthrosamid injections for knee osteoarthritis.
The only major issue I have is that they only deal with knee problems, so you’d need another clinic for different orthopaedic issues. Booking with Mr Wall is also limited to phone or email.

One reason he caught my attention is that he won Doctify’s Outstanding Patient Experience award in 2025, which shows he has strong patient feedback.
I think this comes from his depth of knowledge in his specialisations. He’s well-versed in treating sports injuries, such as Achilles tendonitis and meniscus tears.
He also provides care for adolescents, which is important, since their bodies are still developing.
Furthermore, he uses modern technology in many treatments, including the Prophecy TAR system that relies on 3D imaging for precise ankle replacement surgery.
The main drawbacks are that he’s not available on weekends and demand is high, so securing surgery bookings can take nearly two weeks.

Stephen Guy, or KneeGuy, as his website calls him, is an orthopaedic specialist who has been dealing with sports injuries and arthritis cases for nearly 15 years. What I like is that he works with physios and sports medicine specialists, so you’re not left on your own after surgery.
His treatments include ACL repairs and arthroscopy, which is a less invasive way to check and fix joint or ligament problems. He also provides Arthrosamid injections for people struggling with arthritis.
For more advanced cases, he offers both partial and full knee replacements, showing the depth of his specialisation.
Another thing I appreciate is his Fee Assurance policy, meaning charges stay within insurance limits and patients avoid unexpected bills.
Unfortunately, Stephen focuses only on knees and doesn’t treat NHS patients, so private payment or insurance is required.

Ankle & Co is another clinic I came across that works out of Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital on Leighton Street. It’s led by Ray Monkhouse, a specialist with more than 20 years of professional experience.
He and his team handle bunions with Hallux Valgus surgery, cheilectomy for bone spurs, and Achilles reconstruction for tendon damage.
What stands out to me most is that he also sees NHS patients at Chapel Allerton and Leeds General Infirmary. On top of that, he can bill most insurance companies directly, which saves patients a lot of hassle.
However, he only sees patients two days a week, so appointments can be limited. Some people I talked to also feel he comes across as blunt and, at times, even rude.

Sam Vollans is an orthopaedic specialist who runs Shoulder2Wrist and has over a decade of experience in the field. He trained both in the UK and abroad and focuses on treating shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hands.
I noticed he has a particular strength in elbow surgery, including keyhole procedures, replacements, and paediatric cases. He also provides carpal tunnel and trigger finger surgery, along with shoulder arthroscopy and injections.
