Step back into action with the best orthopaedic specialists in Leeds!

Experience - We prefer orthopaedic specialists with at least three years of professional experience and who are recognised by regulatory bodies, such as the British Orthopaedic Association.

Treatment quality - We assessed whether they provide care that leads to lasting recovery, considering the techniques they use, the facilities they work in, and feedback from patients who’ve gone through their treatment plans.

Availability - We considered how easy it is to book an appointment, whether their clinics are near major roads and public transit stations, and how quickly patients can be seen, especially for urgent cases.

Professionalism - We checked if these specialists communicate clearly, respect patients’ concerns, and maintain a supportive approach throughout consultations and follow-up care.

Price fairness - We looked at whether their consultation fees and treatment costs are reasonable considering their level of expertise, the quality of care provided, and the transparency of their pricing.

The other week, I took a bad fall playing football with pals in the neighbourhood and ended up with a painful knee injury. It hurt enough that my GP suggested I see an orthopaedic specialist to make sure nothing serious was going on.

After a proper check, it turned out to be a muscle sprain, and a few sessions of physio sorted me out. The whole thing made me realise how common musculoskeletal problems are, whether it’s a sprain or something more serious.

Since most of us will face issues like this at some point, I decided to put together a list of the best orthopaedic specialists in Leeds so you know where to go when you need help.

How much does it cost to see an orthopaedic specialist in Leeds?

You can expect to pay around £300 for an initial consultation with an orthopaedic specialist in Leeds. However, your price may vary depending on the specialist’s experience and whether extra tests or treatments are needed.

After my doctor suggested I see an orthopaedic specialist, I decided to visit Leeds Knee Clinic. They can bill most insurance companies directly, including mine, which saved me some hassle.

The specialist I met was Owen Wall, a member of the British Orthopaedic Association with strong experience in stem cell treatments. I was fortunate that my issue was only a muscle sprain, so I didn’t need the more advanced procedures he offers.

After completing the physio sessions, I was back to moving comfortably again.

During my consultation, I asked about other treatments and was surprised to learn they handle ACL injury surgeries and also provide Arthrosamid injections for knee osteoarthritis.

The only major issue I have is that they only deal with knee problems, so you’d need another clinic for different orthopaedic issues. Booking with Mr Wall is also limited to phone or email.

Pros

  • Specialist has almost 30 years of experience
  • Offers advanced treatments like cementless knee replacement
  • Provides ACL reconstruction and revision surgery
  • Arthrosamid injections available for osteoarthritis relief
  • Direct billing with many insurance providers

Cons

  • Mostly limited to knee treatments only
  • Booking restricted to phone or email

I couldn’t be happier with the care I received

“I had ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair with Mr Owen Wall, and I couldn’t be happier with the care I received. From consultation to recovery, everything was smooth and professional. Mr Owen Wall was clear, compassionate, and made me feel confident throughout the process. Recovery is going well, and I’m so grateful to be back on track. Highly recommend!”

I’ve come back stronger than ever

“I’ve unfortunately had three separate knee operations with Dr. Wall. Each time, after surgery and a long rehabilitation process, I’ve come back stronger than ever. He provides clear guidance, sets realistic goals, and gives you the confidence to return to sport. Hopefully I won’t injure my knee again—but if I do, I’ll be going straight back to Dr. Wall.”

Mark Farndon is another orthopaedic specialist based in the same hospital as Owen Wall. He has around 15 years of experience and focuses on treatments for the lower body, most notably the knees, feet, and ankles.

One reason he caught my attention is that he won Doctify’s Outstanding Patient Experience award in 2025, which shows he has strong patient feedback.

I think this comes from his depth of knowledge in his specialisations. He’s well-versed in treating sports injuries, such as Achilles tendonitis and meniscus tears.

He also provides care for adolescents, which is important, since their bodies are still developing.

Furthermore, he uses modern technology in many treatments, including the Prophecy TAR system that relies on 3D imaging for precise ankle replacement surgery.

The main drawbacks are that he’s not available on weekends and demand is high, so securing surgery bookings can take nearly two weeks.

Pros

  • 15 years of experience
  • Specialist in knees, feet, and ankles
  • Awarded Doctify Outstanding Patient Experience 2025
  • Skilled in treating sports injuries
  • Provides care for adolescents
  • Uses modern tech like the Prophecy TAR system

Cons

  • Unavailable on weekends
  • Average two-week wait time for surgeries

My daughter received excellent care

“My daughter received excellent care. She was able to book in quickly and her diagnosis was explained to her in a clear and easy to understand way. She is 13 and suffering from a recurrent knee issue.”

-Keiron Gavaghan, Google Reviews

He was very empathetic and not condescending

“Mr Farndon was very understanding and listened to our daughter and her complaint. He was very empathetic and not condescending unlike some other professionals. The care he gave her was first class, from the initial consultation, through her surgery to the final appointment 10 months later. I have no hesitation in recommending Mr Farndon to anyone with ankle or foot issues.”

Business hours: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM (MON-FRI)

Stephen Guy, or KneeGuy, as his website calls him, is an orthopaedic specialist who has been dealing with sports injuries and arthritis cases for nearly 15 years. What I like is that he works with physios and sports medicine specialists, so you’re not left on your own after surgery.

His treatments include ACL repairs and arthroscopy, which is a less invasive way to check and fix joint or ligament problems. He also provides Arthrosamid injections for people struggling with arthritis.

For more advanced cases, he offers both partial and full knee replacements, showing the depth of his specialisation.

Another thing I appreciate is his Fee Assurance policy, meaning charges stay within insurance limits and patients avoid unexpected bills.

Unfortunately, Stephen focuses only on knees and doesn’t treat NHS patients, so private payment or insurance is required.

Pros

  • Almost 15 years of experience
  • Works closely with physios and sports medicine specialists
  • Offers Arthrosamid injections
  • Can do both partial and full knee replacements
  • Ensures fees are kept within insurance limits

Cons

  • Mostly limited to knee treatments only
  • Doesn’t treat NHS patients

My knee is so much better

“My experience with Mr Guy was fantastic, I had issues with my left ACL, and messed around with the NHS for over 2 years. On seeing Mr Guy I was booked on for surgery the following week. Now I’m 9 months post surgery and my knee is so much better with just the final push of physio to get back to full fitness. Thanks for everything Mr Guy and the team.”

-Thomas Walker, Google Reviews

The outcome of both surgeries has been beyond expectations

“I have had a meniscus repair in both knees by Mr Guy at the Yorkshire Clinic. The outcome of both surgeries has been beyond expectations and the care I received was excellent.”

Ankle & Co is another clinic I came across that works out of Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital on Leighton Street. It’s led by Ray Monkhouse, a specialist with more than 20 years of professional experience.

He and his team handle bunions with Hallux Valgus surgery, cheilectomy for bone spurs, and Achilles reconstruction for tendon damage.

What stands out to me most is that he also sees NHS patients at Chapel Allerton and Leeds General Infirmary. On top of that, he can bill most insurance companies directly, which saves patients a lot of hassle.

However, he only sees patients two days a week, so appointments can be limited. Some people I talked to also feel he comes across as blunt and, at times, even rude.

Pros

  • More than 20 years of experience
  • Can treat NHS patients
  • Direct billing with many insurance providers
  • Offers Hallux Valgus surgery for bunion treatment
  • Skilled in performing Achilles reconstruction

Cons

  • Limited clinic days each week
  • Some find the specialist blunt or unfriendly

My feet now are 100% better

“I had both my feet done for bunion operations, from start to finish it was done in a top professional way with every small detail explained, my feet now are 100% better and can actually wear normal shoes.

Thanks again”

-Tony Throup, Google Reviews

I’m extremely grateful

“My feet were virtually becoming crippled and I had a lot of difficulty walking. This was almost 9 years ago, then I had surgery. Today I look at my feet and I’m extremely grateful. I’ve never had any more issues since and can walk for miles and miles which I do.

So thank you very much!”

Sam Vollans is an orthopaedic specialist who runs Shoulder2Wrist and has over a decade of experience in the field. He trained both in the UK and abroad and focuses on treating shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hands.

I noticed he has a particular strength in elbow surgery, including keyhole procedures, replacements, and paediatric cases. He also provides carpal tunnel and trigger finger surgery, along with shoulder arthroscopy and injections.

What stands out is the way patients speak about him, which helped him earn the Doctify Great Patient Experience Award in 2025. I also appreciate that he treats NHS patients, making his expertise available to people who have tight budgets.

That said, he only accepts bookings for initial consultations on Wednesdays, and any follow-up appointments have to be arranged through email, which feels a bit restrictive.

  • Strong expertise in elbow keyhole surgery and replacements
  • Offers carpal tunnel and trigger finger surgery
  • Can treat NHS patients

Sam is a brilliant surgeon with incredible expertise and knowledge, he filled me with confidence throughout the whole process from consultation to the operation. I’m making great progress after my Laterjet surgery and put this down to Sam’s amazing work!”
