Master numbers fast with the best maths tutors in Leeds!
I’ll admit, I smirked when I saw that maths was my son’s least favourite subject, since it was mine too. But while it’s a funny “like father, like son” moment, I know how important it is to really understand the basics.
If kids only scrape by, the tougher topics later can feel impossible. That’s why I signed him up with a math tutor, and the change has been clear. His test scores are improving bit by bit, and his confidence is growing too!
I don’t want other families to fall behind, so here’s my guide to the best maths tutors in Leeds. And if you need help in other subjects, we’ve also put together a list of the best tutors in Leeds beyond maths.
How much does it cost to hire a maths tutor in Leeds?
Hiring a math tutor in Leeds usually costs around £30 per hour, depending on the tutor’s experience, subject level, and format (online or in-person).
1. Jake Harris Tuition

Address: 43 Aire Quay, Hunslet
Phone number: +44 7515 935744
Business hours: 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM (MON-FRI)
After doing some research, I decided to have Jake Harris tutor my son in maths. He has been at this for years and is a member of The Tutors’ Association, which gave me confidence that he has the professional background I was looking for.
When I sit in on their online sessions, I notice how focused and practical they are. Jake takes his time to explain each concept clearly and even helps with homework, showing step by step how he arrives at the answers.
That approach has made a real difference in how my son understands maths.
Since things are going well, I’m already thinking about continuing with Jake once my son is preparing for university. He offers exam prep tutoring, which I’m sure will be useful.
The only drawbacks are that he doesn’t teach on weekends and payments are taken only by direct debit.
Knows how to explain things in a way that helps me understand
“I’ve worked with Jake for the past 4 years, he has helped me through GCSE and A level content in numerous subjects. Jake is extremely knowledgeable and knows how to explain things in a way that helps me understand. The sessions with Jake are always motivating and encouraging which has helped me build my self belief and confidence. Thanks to Jake I got my first choice university—Loughborough!”

I thank Jake for supporting and guiding my son, who has now managed to achieve his target grades of As in Physics and Maths, and secured a place at the Uni of his choice.”

2. First Class Learning

Address: Oakwood Church, Springwood Rd, Roundhay
Phone number: +44 7707 040714
Business hours: 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM (MON-SUN)
I’ve had a look at First Class Learning, and they’ve been around for more than 20 years, which gives them a bit of weight compared to newer tutoring outfits. They’ve got six centres dotted around the city, so it’s not hard to find one nearby.
Their focus is maths, and everything is tied to the National Curriculum, which I found reassuring since it means kids aren’t learning stuff that won’t help them in class.
They even do a bunch of stuff to improve how their students learn, like using blue worksheets. Apparently, their research showed that the light blue background makes it easier for dyslexic students to read the content.
However, booking a tutoring session isn’t straightforward since you have to leave your details and wait for someone to call back. Fees also vary depending on the centre, which can be a bit confusing.
Our children greatly improved in all aspects of school
“Well what do I say…. Lisa is an excellent tutor with a positive attitude and engaging style. She quickly identified areas that our children had to improve on and gave targeted practice and coaching. As a result, our children greatly improved in all aspects of school. Especially in maths. I would never send my children anywhere else. We travel 1hr40mins round trip so my children can be tutored by Lisa and her team.”

My son has progressed from 63% to 95% in the space of a few months!
“I would highly recommend first class learning. My son was in year 5 when I noticed he was struggling at school with maths he had no confidence in. Since joining first class learning he has grown in confidence and he is retaining information a lot better he feels happy going to his sessions. Lisa and her team are brilliant at providing support and encouragement and my son has progressed from 63% to 95% in the space of a few months!”

3. Explore Learning

Address: 9E, Kidacre St
Phone number: +44 113 457 0643
Business hours:
11:00 AM – 8:00 PM (TUES and WED)
11:00 AM – 7:00 PM (THURS)
11:00 AM – 6:00 PM (FRI)
9:30 AM – 5:00 PM (SAT)
Explore Learning has been around since 2001, and their two centres in Leeds mainly focus on maths tutoring for children aged 4–16. They also provide SATs support, which is useful if your child needs that extra boost.
I found their Compass tool quite handy since it gives you access to online learning materials at any time, so practice doesn’t have to stop once the session ends.
It’s good that there’s no joining fee, which makes it easier to give them a try. They also offer financial support for households earning £7,400 a year, which opens the door for families who might otherwise struggle to afford tutoring.
Unfortunately, their opening hours aren’t always consistent, and that can be awkward when you’re trying to plan. They also use a subscription model, and cancelling isn’t straightforward because you need to meet the centre manager before the 23rd of the month.

Business hours:
8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (MON-SAT)
8:00 AM – 7:00 PM (SUN)
Tutor Doctor has been around since 2000, and I’ve found them to be a decent option if you want flexibility. They offer both online and in-home tutoring, and their maths tutors can cover algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and even calculus!
It’s reassuring that they also have tutors who can adapt lessons for kids with special needs, so families don’t feel like they’re left with a one-size-fits-all approach.
But what really caught my eye was the set of guarantees they offer. There’s a 60-day promise where you can get a refund if you’re not happy with the experience, and they also have a tutor match guarantee.
That means if the first tutor doesn’t click, they’ll rematch you with someone else at no extra cost.
However, they sometimes miss enquiries, and they ask for payment upfront, which can be annoying for some people.
My daughter received a better grade than she was originally predicted
“Our Tutor Neko was great; she fitted in extra sessions running up to the exams and was very helpful and supportive in sessions. My daughter received a better grade than she was originally predicted and I can credit that due to her own hard work and the great support of the tutor.”

If price is the main thing holding you back from getting a maths tutor, EducateFirst is worth a look. They’ve been around for more than 16 years, and they charge a flat £7.50 an hour for class tutoring, which is hard to beat.
There are no registration fees, and you’re not locked into any long-term contract, so it feels straightforward and flexible.
Their maths classes cover a wide range, including concepts taught in basics, GCSE, and A-Level prep. If group lessons aren’t the right fit, they also offer home tutoring, which gives families another option.
That said, they can take up to a day to reply to enquiries. Classes also fill up quickly because of the low cost, so you need to book early if you want a spot.

This has to be one of the better places I have sent my children to be taught
“This is my first review. This has to be one of the better places I have sent my children to be taught. They seem to know what they are doing and children love it. Very clean and safe place for the children to be in and it feels just like school but with much smaller groups of children in each class. Children come back smiling and keep talking about what they learnt all afternoon. They have a better school report than before so things cannot be bad at all. A good start for their early school years. Hope someone will find this review useful. Thank you.”
