The best fish and chips chippies in Leeds fry up fresh and non-greasy bites!
Life only has a few certainties: death, taxes, and fish and chips being a favourite in Leeds. I mean, no shocker; this British staple has been around since the 19th century, and I’m betting my pint money it’ll never go out of style.
As for why it’s dead famous, some credit its cheap prices, others the cultural relevance, and a few point to its history. If you ask us, though, it’s just downright delicious.
And just to prove we’re not talking rubbish, we scribbled a list of our trusted joints when it comes to this iconic duo, specifically those serving quality fish and batter, not day-old greasebombs.
Portside Fish & Chips
– From portside_yorkshire
Address: 298 Harrogate Rd, Moortown
Contact Details: 0113 390 4460
Operating Hours:
- Mon to Sat – 11:30 am to 8 pm
- Sun – 3 pm to 8 pm
Portside cooks their fish and chips in veg oil, so it’s a tad easier on the stomach. I’d say the same for the tags, with a decent-sized plate costing £10.50 (or £8.50 if you want it light).
Taste-wise, the fish (often haddock from the west coast) is sweet and flaky, while the chips are seasoned hot, similar to those of Nando’s.
Tip: You can’t eat here; it’s best to order by ringing them up.
Saltd & Batterd
– From saltdandbatterd
Address: 210 Woodhouse Ln, Woodhouse
Contact Details: 0113 243 2085
Operating Hours:
- Mon to Fri – 11 am to 12 am
- Sat – 11 am to 3 am
Not playing it safe is Saltd & Batterd’s go-to move. This chippy is the sort where you can have white fish and scallops in the same batter.
Prices kick off at £8.50, though I say go hard on the £12.85 plate, as its portions give you bang for your buck. Vegans get something to eat, too, thanks to the neutral banana blossoms that take the seasoning well.
Tip: Check out their Insta. Discounts and deals (like ‘buy one, take one’ offers) are announced there.
The Little Fisherman
– From thelittlefisherman
Address: 121 High St, Yeadon
Contact Details: 07756 567788
Operating Hours:
- Tue to Fri – 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, 4 pm to 8 pm
- Sat – 11:30 am to 1:30 pm
Old-fashioned might be the most fitting word for The Little Fishermen. And that’s not throwing shade; just ask the fans of their traditionally savoury and clean fish and chips.
Heck, even their prices are proper old-school. For less than a tenner, I got the regular-sized fish, with mushy peas as an extra side.
What’s neat is they don’t serve dodgy, overwhelmingly massive pieces. The batter is also on the crispier, lighter side, which works a treat with my curry sauce obsession.
Tip: Wear your walking shoes. The nearby dam is worth a stroll.
Mother Hubbard’s
– From mother_hubbards
Address: 52 Harehills Rd, Harehills
Contact Details: 0113 236 1000
Operating Hours: Daily – 11 am to 10 pm
Being open since 1972 hasn’t affected Mother Hubbard’s cooking. They still dish out firm and fresh haddock, generally priced between £7.95 and £10.45.
I love the chunkier range of sides, too. Fish cakes, scampi, onion rings, battered sausages, and nuggets are on the menu, and this joint isn’t stingy on the portions.
Tip: Halal options are available. Just ask!
Mermaid Fish Bar
– From mermaid_fish_bar_leeds
Address: 383 Harehills Ln, Harehills
Contact Details: 0113 249 4427
Operating Hours: Mon to Sat – 11:30 am to 7 pm
Mermaid Fish Bar saved me a ton back in uni. The value you’ll get here is huge, much like their hefty, ‘shark-sized’ servings that rarely go beyond 10 quid but can feed two.
Seeing the white fish being cooked in real-time is a big plus. Another bonus is their selection of smoky and spiced donner kebabs, perfect if you’re really, really starving for flavourbombs.
Tip: Lunchtime deals are served here. Call for the exact hours.
Oceans
– From longska
Address: Crossgates Shopping Centre, 44-46 Austhorpe Rd, Cross Gates
Contact Details: 0113 260 6671
Operating Hours:
- Tue to Thu – 11 am to 8:30 pm
- Fri – 11 am to 9 pm
- Sat – 11 am to 8 pm
If you like it thick, tender, and clean, Oceans might be the chip shop to hit. Their best-seller is cod (and there’s a gluten-free version), so the overall character is mild and ‘less fishy,’ especially compared to haddock.
The batter deserves a shout, given it’s often crispy and holds up nicely. You also have loads of sides to pair with it: mozzarella sticks, sausages, peas, curry sauce, the lot.
Tip: Parking nearby can be a nightmare, so opt for walking, biking, or public transit.
Murgatroyds
– From murgatroydsrestaurant
Address: Harrogate Road, Yeadon
Contact Details: 0113 250 0010
Operating Hours: Daily – 11:30 am to 9 pm
I scoffed fish straight from Icelandic waters at the award-winning Murgatroyds, and I’ll sum up the experience as ‘classic.’ Why? The serving was large and flavour-packed.
Haddock is what they mainly use, golden for fans of stronger tastes. I was feeling famished that time, so I went with the £15.96 piece, and it was a heavy fillet served alongside chips, bread, and butter.
Pensioners of 60-plus have it even better here. It just takes them £15.50 to score a three-course feed!
Tip: Avoid the loooong queue by dropping by early, somewhere between 11:30 am and 12 pm.
The Skyliner
– From skylinerleeds
Address: 11-15 Austhorpe View, Whitkirk
Contact Details: 0113 264 6853
Operating Hours:
- Mon to Wed – 11:30 am to 8:30 pm
- Thu to Sat – 11:30 am to 9 pm
The same family that opened The Skyliner in 1962 still runs it in 2025. That’s a glowing sign of consistency, if you ask me.
What I love about this chip shop, though, is that they don’t stick to one option. Sure, haddock is the highlight, but you can get it in many ways: jumbo (16 oz), gluten-free, in a platter with scampi, squid, and prawn, and even smoked!
Tip: The vibe is cosier in the evening. Just remember that the last orders are taken 30 minutes before the closing time.
The Fisherman’s Wife
– From thefishermanswife_leeds
Address: Leeds Kirkgate Market, 12-14 George St
Contact Details: 0113 243 5126
Operating Hours:
- Mon to Fri – 10:30 am to 4:30 pm
- Sat – 10:30 am to 5 pm
Sustainably sourced, The Fisherman’s Wife brings Norwegian haddock and cod to the city folk. Plates range from £13.92 to £20.96, with each option rolled out with fresh-cut chips.
The batter changes a bit with every order, meaning there’s something for your taste. Some are light in seasoning, while others have a ‘beefy’ edge.
Tip: Not all of their offers are posted online. Ask the staff for unannounced deals.
Wetherby Whaler
– From wetherbywhalers
Address: Otley Rd, Guiseley
Contact Details: 01943 884228
Operating Hours:
- Mon to Thu – 11:30 am to 8 pm
- Fri to Sat – 11:30 am to 8:30 pm
- Sun – 12 pm to 8 pm
Wetherby Whaler may have been around for over 45 years, but their quality isn’t showing signs of ageing. Patrons still get daily-delivered Icelandic haddock, all prepared in-house.
You’ll hardly have to worry about what’s in your fish and chips either, with the shop’s Food Hygiene Rating of 5 and gluten-free options.
In terms of prices, between £10 and £20 is the typical range. Seniors get most of the perks, since they can feast on a haddock fillet, homemade soup, and soft-whipped ice cream for £16.45.
Tip: They have a loyalty program for kids, and the rewards include free meals!
Ritz Fisheries
– From ritzfisheries
Address: 2 Lower Wortley Rd
Contact Details: 07490 241179
Operating Hours:
- Mon to Fri – 11:15 am to 2 pm, 4 pm to 7 pm
- Sat – 11:15 am to 6:30 pm
Traditional and well-priced, Ritz Fisheries is bang-on for foodies on a tight budget. Your £5.20 already bags you a decent-sized haddock here.
The larger £9.30 plate isn’t a shabby pick, though. From our experience, it’s enough to feed two.
Even the sides won’t break the bank. An individual order of peas, beans, spam fritters, and steak pies doesn’t go beyond the £4 mark.
Tip: Sometimes, they close early in the evening. Call first to dodge disappointment.
Maypole Fisheries
– From maypolefishchips
Address: 28 Cross Grn, Otley
Contact Details: 01943 462625
Operating Hours:
- Mon – 4:30 pm to 9 pm
- Tue to Sat – 11:30 am to 2 pm, 4:30 pm to 9 pm
Maypole Fisheries’ food is always cooked-to-order and fried the old way in dripping sauce. They also use a homemade, secret batter and thick cuts of haddock, so both the quality and ratio are on point.
The coolest bit? You can have a filling plate of overnight-soaked peas, fish, and chips for less than a tenner! We’re not against spending extra on those authentic Yorkshire fish cakes, though.
Tip: Deliveries are yet to be offered, but you have the option to collect instead.
The Oxford Place
– From theoxfordplace
Address: 2 Oxford Pl
Operating Hours:
- Thu to Fri – 5 pm to 9:30 pm
- Sat – 12 pm to 9:30 pm
- Sun – 12 pm to 8 pm
Folks steering clear of wheat might get hooked on multi-awarded The Oxford Place. Everything is gluten-free here (if you’re looking for more gluten-free options in the city, look here.
Their fish and chips is on the pricier side, though, with the haddock fillet costing £20.96. Nevertheless, it’s splurge-worthy, as the plate comes with thicker chips and tartare sauce (plus the resto is prettier than most).
Tip: Unlike most entries, you can hire this one for private events.
Woodside Fisheries
– From woodsidefish
Address: 274 Low Ln, Horsforth
Contact Details: 0113 258 2371
Operating Hours:
- Tue to Wed – 11 am to 7:30 pm
- Thu to Fri – 11 am to 8 pm
- Sat – 11 am to 7:30 pm
I’m mad crazy about Woodside Fisheries’ heavyweights: MSC-certified haddock and homemade steak pies. The cherry on top is that you can have a go at both without paying a fiver.
They’re not shy on the extras either, especially the scraps. But if you truly want an extra layer of punch, get the beef stock gravy or mint sauce (or why not both?).
Tip: Parking is free at Springfield Mount. You’ll find it alongside the chippy’s entrance.
Kirbys of Meanwood
– From kirbysofmeanwood
Address: 24 Stonegate Rd, Meanwood
Contact Details: 0113 278 6180
Operating Hours:
- Mon to Thu – 11:15 am to 8 pm
- Fri – 11:15 am to 9 pm
- Sat – 11:15 am to 8 pm
Kirbys is made for haddock and deals enthusiasts. Fish here is MSC-approved and local, plus you can earn loyalty points with every order.
The flavour and texture, meanwhile, are true old-school. They season things mildly, and you can still savour the delicate profile of the moist fish, with the coating thick yet airy.
Tip: ‘Meal for two’ deals are rolled out daily from 3 pm onwards.
